With few resources dedicated to the specific topic of community + arts + internet online, we decided the best plan would be to isolate each intersection of community/arts, arts/internet, internet/community. By doing so, we can clarify terms and become familiar with each of those realms that affect our work. The articles on these topics might help those of us from other backgrounds understand the big picture.
We are actively looking for examples of inspiring projects; we have conducted several interviews with people from this sometimes disparate realms and we conducted two action research residencies to see what it would take to get this work done, and help us make recommendations for future plans.
As arts practitioners, we can learn about the new media of communication networks. As community arts officers and community developers we can see examples of this work, and understand the potential value. As technologists, designers, and programmers, we can consider the possibility to share our skills in our local communities.
We hoped that by collecting these voices together on this topic they each might say something that taken together could give us an understanding of what bringing together community, arts, and the internet might entail, imply or require.
We thank the interviewees greatly for donating their time to this project. We chose people who represented a wider community in hopes that people within their communities would be attracted to this conversation and come here to share their own ideas.
